Ahmedabad Haveli Heritage Walk
The literal meaning of the word haveli yields the synonym – mansion. The term ‘Haveli’ conjures up the
images of opulent mansions, replete with grandeur and splendour. These Havelis showcase the vernacular architecture of the local land.
They are a visual symphony of art and architecture. There are many such Havelis in the gritty bylanes of old Ahmedabad. Unlike in other states of the country, here these are more into domestic realms and do not have the tag of monumental status. Many such Havelis in the city still belong to the citizenry. Many are in ruins but the majority are already renovated, restored, rejuvenated and are throbbing with life. In addition, some are converted into retreat centres catering to the urbane elite.
Haveli architecture
The haveli architecture was a manifestation of magnificence. They also reflected the social status of the
owner. The major construction material used was wood. Intricate carvings of wood were abundant and
evident in the columns, brackets, courtyards and the entrance. These wooden carvings were liberally
smeared with black preservative oil. As a result, the carvings developed dark overtones overtime. Initially, the
Havelis catered to the worship place of the Vaishnav community. However, gradually these became
synonymous with the living places of the aristocrats, the zamindars, the ‘diwans’ and the social elite.
The enterprising Gujarati mind
The enterprising Gujarati ‘baniya dimag’ is never short of out of the blue ideas. In other words, this fact is common knowledge. We have literal proof of this. For instance, in other places like Jaipur, Jodhpur, etc, many
Havelis are in a state of neglect or in ruins. However, major chunks of our Amdavadi Havelis have been restored and lo and behold converted into heritage hotels!!! A commendable feat indeed!!!
