Ahmedabad History Walk – Walking Through The 14th Century

The story behind Ahmedabad

Once, Sultan AhmedShah saw a sight. This left him both intrigued and impressed. He saw a hare chasing away a dog. In other words, Sultan AhmedShah saw through the sue generis attitude of the citizenry of this town. As a result, he decided to establish the city of Ahmedabad in the early 14th century on the banks of the Sabarmati.

Why this walk?

As an ode to the monarch, we have curated the Ahmedshah Ahmedabad walk with the sole intention of throwing light on the otherwise forgotten personality. The walk combines mythology, folklore, history, antiquity, and chronology.

Route Itinerary

The walk commences from the place where the foundation stone of Ahmedabad was laid. En route, it will cover the first monument built by the Sultan in Ahmedabad – the Ahmedshah mosque, the popular Bhadra Fort ( his living quarters). In addition, three other historical monuments are on the list: Teen Darwaja, Jama mosque, Raja no Hajiro.

Historical monuments on the route

In order to fortify the city, around 21 darwajas were erected along the circumference of the city, the first being the Teen Darwaja, which is included in this walk. Similarly, the walk covers many other famous monuments. These depict the unsurpassable Islamic style of architecture. En route is the Jama Masjid, which is a medieval mosque. It is the largest mosque of that era. The next stop is the Raja no Hajiro or the final resting place of the sultan. The place is at present a mausoleum.

Our promise

We promise to give you an uninterrupted spattering of mythological richness by means of providing a sneak peek on how the city came into being, how did the idea take birth, how it flourished, how it contributed to the history and how it has sustained itself without losing its original flavor. And yes the walk would surely be incomplete without a mention and subsequent visit to the first Vadilal ice cream parlor of the city!!!

Our recommendation

We would recommend this walk specifically to the students and the ‘bachcha’ party to give them a sense of belongingness to the roots of the city. If there is an iota of doubt in your mind pertaining to the city’s name as Ahmedabad or Aashawal or Karnavati, then please jump to this bandwagon. In other words, this walk will surely put all your doubts to rest. This is our assurance !!!
