Ahmedabad has a rich cultural diversity. It offers a cosmopolitan atmosphere for a multitude of religions to coexist. Jainism is one of the largely followed religions of the city. As per the last census, Jains constitute about 3.62% of the total populace of the city.

Jainism is a metaphor for religious piety. It also stands for spiritual enlightenment. Similarly, it promotes self-discipline and teaches ‘no injury’ to all the living creatures. Moreover, it caters to all in general. The principle of non-violence is at the core of religion. It seeks to attain enlightenment through renunciation.

Jainism in the city

Ahmedabad is home to about 22 Jain derasars(Jain Temple) built roughly a century ago. Tagging them as historic and monumental is thus justified. Jain derasars are always mesmerizing and serene. Their floating candles, intricate stone detailing, and interiors are always special. These places of worship bear testimony of the discipline of the followers !!!. These centinels are proof of the glorious craftsmanship of yore.

Jainism and non-violence

Another feature of the religion is its strict non-violent principle. The Jain and Vaishnav communities follow the principles of non-violence. In conclusion, this may be an important contributor towards an important factor. That of Gandhiji choosing Ahmedabad for establishing his first ashram in the country in the early 19th century.

Linking the present generation with history

There is an urgent need to equip the newer generations with the knowledge of the past. Moreover, there is a rich cultural dexterity that the religion presents.
