Ahmedabad Pol Walk

Meandering through the labyrinths of the innumerable by lanes of old Ahmedabad, one is surely going
to get jostled by the close-knit community spirit demonstrated by the vernaculars here. Welcome to the
‘Pols’ of Ahmedabad, which exemplifies a unique style of cluster housing. Or in other words community living. The concept of Pols originated in Patan but the credit of its sustainability across generations and time frames lies with our very own Ahmedabad. Cut to the present times, ‘Pols’ have become congruent to the Amdavadi landscape – which means that in the current times, cluster housing can solely be considered as the idiosyncrasy of no other city of Gujarat except Ahmedabad. Period!!!

In the current times, when we are unaware of our next-door neighbors, these housing clusters stand out
for their singularity in community living and bonhomie. Originally, created as a last-ditch attempt to
escape communal unrests, these Pols came to be living spaces for people based on their specific
communities, religions, skills and work domains. The construction of the pols was in accordance with the
Vastu Shashtra principles. These spaces are like the alchemy of brotherhood and camaraderie inhabited
by homogenous groups of people. Even today the pols are fairly successful in generating a sense of
belongingness among the newer generation. Whereas in the olden times, these served as transmission
as well as congregation centers for the freedom movement. There is a community sharing of resources
and conglomeration of cultures all around.

Connect with us to know more about this sui generis style of community housing that is in existence
today only on the Amdavadi soil through our Pol Walk.
