Jamalpur Heritage Walk

History has it that Sultan Ahmed Shah founded Ahmedabad in the 14th century. Within a span of a few years, the city started growing by leaps and bounds, in terms of prosperity and area both. With the increased prosperity, threat from invaders loomed large. Therefore, with an intent to fortify the city’s borders, the grandson of the Sultan ordered the erection of a wall circumnavigating the city. This wall, for instance, had originally seven doors or ‘darwajas’. The ‘Darwazas’ or ‘Purs’ of the city served as entry/exit points from and to the city. Moreover, Jamalpur is one of the original seven ‘Purs’ of the city. It formed the southernmost part of the city. Initially, only saints lived here. Later on, when the Marathas laid siege to gain control over Ahmedabad, Jamalpur served as their base camp.

Jamalpur is a treasure trove of heritage architectural structures. It houses the centuries-old temple of Lord Jagannath. The second-largest Rathyatra procession of our country takes place from here. When this happens,  the entire area is converted into a sea of devout followers. Cut across to the Jamalpur flower market which is the perfect spot for flower shopping. There are shops lined up with flowers in myriad hues and fragrances. A treat to the olfactory as well as visionary senses indeed. A riot of color and smells to choose from. Not done yet, the vicinity also houses the APMC vegetable and fruit market, making one spoilt for choice in terms of freshness, price, quality and many more parameters of fruits and farm-fresh veggies.
