Story of a special Spicy Spongy Cake: Khaman at Das Khaman
By Zalak Patel | Published on : July 3, 2018First of all, there is a huge difference between Dhokla and Khaman. Dhokla is made out of rice and dal batter whereas Khaman is made out of only dal or chickpea (chana) flour.
We hope that this basic fundamental is clear now and high time we should stop messing up with Gujarati’s emotions. If you are planning to visit Ahmedabad or if you ‘are’ in Ahmedabad, don’t miss trying onto the variety of Khamans available at Das Khaman.
Must have at Das Khaman ?
Fried Plain Khaman, Khaman with pepper, Curd Khaman, Green fry Khaman and Tam Tam Khaman is our personal favorite (Yummy!). Try out all varieties of Khaman without fail with its unique taste and texture.
Oh, God! It is really difficult to complete this post when our mouth drooling mode is massively ON. Apart from this, they do serve Khandvi, Fulwadi, Sev Khamani, Sandwich Dhokla, and Chinese samosa too!
And not to forget, they do serve Undhiyu, Gujarati’s deliciously made recipe from mix vegetable along with Lilwa Kachori which happens to be winter special dishes!

Share address of the shop, quick quick ? Is it far away from where I stay ??
Don’t worry,Das Khaman has variouse outlets across Ahmedabad.
Gol Limda, Stadium Cross Road- Navrangpura, Nehrunagar, Gurukul and Ankur-Shastri Nagar. Having so many outlets, it seems to be quite a huge and well-known food joint of Ahmedabad.
It is interesting to know that the first outlet of Das Khaman was founded in 1922 at Gol Limda/ Danapith area of Ahmedabad.
If you think we are just flaunting this news of Das Khaman being founded in 1922 and 96 Years old, then let us confirm that ‘we are not’.
Yes, Das Khaman of Ahmedabad is a heritage food joint of Ahmedabad which has its own history too.
Pitambardas Kanjibhai Thakker started selling Khaman in 1922 near Regal Cinema and New High School area with the small moveable stall known as Khumcha. Originally, he belonged to Amreli district of Saurashtra and later moved to Surat with a dream of becoming a businessman. He joined a Khaman shop and learned how to make this dish. He gained knowledge that there are two types of Khaman available- Vati Dal na Khaman and Nylon Khaman.
The special Khaman which Das Khaman serves is known as Vati Dal na Khaman. Pitambardas was kind enough to understand that he should not compete with the person who taught him to make tasty Khamans so he moved to Ahmedabad to start his own business.
Now, this business is reaching heights with generations taking this forward by introducing new varieties of Khamans. Going forward, Pitambardas has also set up his business at Gollimada which happens to be the first branch of Das Khaman.
Well, there is a famous saying that, ‘Behind every successful man, there is a woman’ which perfectly applies to Das Khaman. Nanduba, the wife of Pitambardas played an important role in escalating Das Khaman’s journey from being a helping hand of Pitambardas in making Khamans.
Fun Facts
It won’t be wrong if we say that Pitambardas was the one who has introduced the food home delivery concept in Ahmedabad. He used to publish an advertisement in the newspaper saying, ‘Place your order on call and get delivered at your home or office’. He used to get orders from Raipur during heavy rain but he never stopped. He delivered Khammans right at the doorstep with full committed despite heavy rains. Even today, his fourth generation is taking forward his morals, ethics and Amdavadi’s satisfaction which says, ‘KHAMAN TO DAS NA J’.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was a huge fan of Khaman of Das Khaman and recently it has been honored by RED FM KaThappa, 2018.
Reason behind the name ‘DAS KHAMAN’
The founder, Shri Pitambardas Kanjibhai Thakkar picked up DAS from his first name and named it ‘Das Khaman’.
